Shots fired, one arrested after dispute in Cottage Grove
EUGENE, Ore. - No one was injured and one man is in custody after shots were fired during a dispute at a home southwest of Cottage Grove.
Lane County Sheriff's Office recieved calls at around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning with reports of multiple gunshots and a family dispute in a home on Tioga Drive, an unincorporated area of Lane County.
"It was reported several people in the house, dispute primarily between two men - two males - with some shotguns in the home," said Captain Byron Trapp with the Lane County Sheriff's Office.
Two armored military vehicles and deputies responded to the scene as a precaution.
When sheriff's deputies arrived on scene, they arrested David Pendergrass without incident. Pendergrass was lodged in the Lane County Jail on three counts of recklessly endangering and three counts of menacing.
Neighbors on Tioga Court say this isn't the first time they've heard gunfire from the home.
"Quite a few shootings. I'd say monthly. Maybe every couple months," said neighbor Tom Lake.
"Last summer, it was quite frequent, and the Sheriff's were here before and I informed them of the situation," said neighbor Lenny Vandenbroeke.
When Vandenbroeke hears shots fired, he goes into safety mode. "Duck and cover. Get my own shotgun out. Protect ourselves," he said.
ThisBITES, guessing you didn't read the below. How much is FREE? Sounds like taking money from drug dealers helps us citizens, and they look awesome. On a side note, that big armor vehicle was in our neighborhood about a year ago taking down a meth/cocaine house with armed druggies. I for one VERY much appreciated it being there. Haters will always hate, so hate away!!!!
Running two armored vehicles out to Cottage Grove is exactly why LCSO is OUT of money.
@thisBITES! ???? LCSO is out of money for using $20 worth of diesel to move free armored vehicles to a residence where shots are being fired inside a residence during a dispute....Explain how bringing armor to resolve a shots fired dispute "is exactly why LCSO is out of money"...Should LCSO have left the armored vehicles in the garage and just hoped the situation ended peacefully?  Using armored vehicles for high risk calls involving armed people is just common sense!!!Â
No surprises here. Â Previous history of shooting, yet still somehow allowed to retain their weapons. Â No doubt they still will. Â I don't think menacing or reckless endangerment rise to the level of having his guns removed, unfortunately. Â Next time (and surely there will be one) it may be much more tragic. Â Remember, 99% of shootings are between people who know each other, and 47% of those are between family members. Â http://www.bradycampaign.org/studies/view/183/
@Baldr Odinson ---compelling and tragic #s. 99%? In combat we shoot people 99%we don't know, save for the Civil War. I don't think the people "know 'each other'". Perhaps that figure includes shootings where one party does not know the party that knows it. Like a hit man scenario.
But, I am not surprized by the 47% figure. so true that familiarity breeds contempt...can't live withm can't live w/o 'em!
well, thank goodness it was FINALLY a shotgun. Â
Â
Glad everyone made it out alive, as a side note.Â
Sherrifs, Take Note.

When Vandenbroeke hears shots fired, he goes into safety mode. "Duck and cover. Get my own shotgun out. Protect ourselves," he said.
IT'S WORKING.
DON'T FIX IT MISTER SHERRIF'S.
peace.
Why does a sheriff need armored military vehicles? I thought it should say lodged in lane county jail for three seconds.
@givupongod To protect his Deputies and the public! If you were responding to a shots fired call you would want some protection wouldn't you? These types of calls are very common. Commend your Sheriff for obtaining these vehicles from the Military at ZERO cost to Lane County. Thank Lane County Drug dealers who forfeited seized drug money for paint and refurbishment!Â
@Team Green Drugs should be legal. And no I do not think they need to bring out or have 2 armored military vehicles. For a citizen with a shotgun?
Â
END PROHIBITION NOW!
@givupongod So you would just walk up the driveway and not worry about a "citizen with a shotgun" who is firing inside the house???   Drug abuse does impair brain function... In real life you don't get to hit the "play again" button once you catch a bullet.
@givupongod Yep, you're right. A good friend lives near there and has the whole story. Family trapped inside, bullets zipping by, not from a shotgun. PS, sad to hear you gave up on God, but He still loves you!!!!!!!!!
How much do you suppose that armored car cost. We did not ever have anything like that. Short of money???
@souptonuts The vehicles were surplus from the US Military and didn't cost anything to obtain. Outfitting and refurbishments were done with seized drug money which can only be used by statute for equipment and training related to drug enforcement. A new armored vehicle like this would have cost at least $350,000 but probably much more. This is an example of how hard the department works at getting things done with few resources!
@Team Green @souptonuts ---are the new ones so expensive because of the armour/locker compartments or the failsafe engines?  driving performance? Seems like a decommisioned tank would be another option.
Nearly 1/2 a $milion for an armored truck...jez! Must be made of kevlar.
Really complete news story there KVAL...
That armored vehicle was likely purchased through a grant from Homeland Security, just like all the other county sheriffs offices with grant money, and you wonder why the US is $17T in debt.. And seriously, do the police really need military armor?! Like that?! Yeah, they may look impressive, but they are going to have to get out of the bloody things to do their jobs, aren't they? Unless you can think of a reason for them to just stop just blast away from their turrets there.. Do we as a people honestly feel that the police need that kind of weaponry? Welcome to the new police state of America. Predator drones, the Patriot Act, NSA's Data Collection Center in Utah (which records ALL electronic communication), and now a militarized police force.. Why do you think they want your guns? Did you know that according to the FBI's statistics the three weapons used in homicides are 1) the baseball bat, 2)the knife, and 3) the hammer.. Think.about it, and before you just dismiss this as conspiracy b.s. do some fact checking.
@Lapis_Philosophorum The military didn't want the armored vehicles any more so they offered them to civilian law enforcement at no cost. Otherwise they would have been scrapped. Without a doubt these vehicles will at the very least save some innocent persons life in the next 25 years of service with LCSO. There are no weapons on the vehicle other than the same guns LCSO has been carrying for the last 15 years. LCSO had a need for these vehicles years ago but couldn't afford them. You your self should do some fact checking because you are completely wrong and blogging incorrect facts!
