EUGENE, Ore. - Road work started Monday on Willamette Street between 19th and 23rd avenues.

Motorists and businesses already see the work as an inconvenience - and worry about total closures.

James Barta of Dentistry for Children said that would make it hard to get to his business.

"It's going to be a major inconvience," he said. "The complex is relatively difficult to access if you don't have access off Willamette."

The Lane Blood Center said the city has been working well with them so far, even before any construction began.

"They came through when we first heard about the construction and said that they would try their darnedest to at least allow an opportunity for us to get out and onto 24th and get out to the city and so on," said Fred Hayden with Lane Blood Center.

The project will reconstruct sidewalks and islands and repave that stretch of Willamette.

The funding for the $850,000 project comes from voter-approved street bond measures.
