Man fatally shot in Salem parking lot, shooter on the loose

SALEM, Ore. -- A man is dead after he was shot leaving a Salem Walmart store Monday morning, the Salem Police Department said.

The incident happened at the Walmart at 1940 Turner Road Southeast just before 6 a.m. Monday.

Investigators said that Bryan John Knorr, 28 from Salem,  was leaving the store after shopping when he was confronted by a lone male suspect in a Honda SUV. The two had a brief interaction before the suspect opened fire.

Knorr taken to Salem Hospital and was pronounced dead later in the day.

Police interviewed a number of witnesses at the store, which is ope 24 hours a day. They also reviewed surveillance recorded by a number of cameras around the store.

Detectives said that the shooter may have known the victim; therefore, they don't believe the public is in any immediate danger even though the gunman hasn't been captured.

Police said they're looking into finding the vehicle associated with the shooting -- a gold or tan Honda SUV, which is similar to a CRV, that has a spare tire mounted in the rear. The vehicle also has a white temporary registration mounted in the rear window and a blue placard mounted where the license plate would normally be displayed.

Anyone with information about this vehicle or the shooting is asked to call the Salem Police Department at (503) 588-8477.
