GRASS VALLEY, Ore. – A semi truck hauling apples crashed on Highway 97 five miles south of Grass Valley early Sunday morning.
The driver was injured, but police expect him to survive. The crash totaled the truck and trailer, state police said.
Lt. Gregg Hastings said the driver, 47-year-old Juan Guillermo Jimenez of California, told police he was driving south on Highway 97 at around 5:30 a.m. when he swerved to avoid deer on the road. The truck and trailer traveled on to the shoulder and Jimenez over-corrected, causing the truck and trailer to roll off the highway, Hastings said.
Jimenez, who was wearing a seat belt, got out of the crushed cab. Medics took him to a hospital in The Dalles.
No citations were issued after the crash.
The apples that were not ruined will be donated to charity, Hastings said.
