Sheriff: Teen girl attacked in downtown Roseburg

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A Roseburg area transient attacked a teen girl after she let him use her phone on Thursday, the Sheriff's office said.

Authorities said Michael Wheeler, 36, attacked the 16-year-old Winston girl after she let him use her cellphone on Mill Street near McMenamins.

Officials say she was able to break free and call 911, but Wheeler grabbed her phone and took off.

The Sheriff's office says the girl suffered minor injuries to her hand.

Authorities say they found Wheeler a short time later near the Wells Fargo Bank in downtown Roseburg.

Deputies say he was arrested without incident.

Wheeler still had the phone when police found him, and it was returned to the victim.

Wheeler was lodged in the Douglas County Jail, charged by deputies with third degree robbery, fourth degree assault and second degree theft.
