SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A 20-year-old man was unintentionally shot and killed by his younger brother Tuesday, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

Lane County Sheriff's Office deputies and Mohawk Valley Fire/Rescue personnel responded to a 911 call at 3:21 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2012, to a report of a gunshot wound at a residence in the 36000 block of McGowan Creek Road.

The preliminary investigation suggests Ogg's younger brother was holding the gun when it unintentionally discharged, the sheriff's office said.

"One of the younger brothers of the victim picked up a firearm -- not knowing it was loaded -- and made a motion with it, a non-threatening motion," said Captain Bill Thompson with Lane County Sheriff's Office. "It didn't appear to be a horseplay incident, but for whatever reason, the gun discharged."

Firefighters arrived and pronounced Steven Ogg, 20, of Springfield dead at the scene. The sheriff's office said Ogg suffered a single gunshot wound to his torso.

"There was nothing than anybody could have done medically to change that outcome," said Thompson.

The sheriff's office told KVAL News that the Ogg family live on the grounds of the Emerald Empire Gun Club as caretakers. The shooting took place at a home on the property.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office, Lane County District Attorney's Office and Medical Examiner are continuing the investigation.

Friends said Ogg was engaged to be married.
