EUGENE, Ore. - Police shot and killed a man with a gun during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon near Churchill High School.
The high school and nearby Kennedy Middle School were not involved. Both schools locked down as a precaution.
An officer pulled over a man on a motorbike across the street from the school. Police said the man had a gun. Details about who fired and when have not yet been released.
Police said the officer called for emergency cover and a modified school lockdown for Churchill High School at 2:45 p.m.
Shortly afterwards, the officer reported shots fired.
A 44-year-old man is dead to the south of the high school, police said.
Lane County's Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team will respond to investigate. State law requires an investigation of any use of deadly force by police.
Officials said Bailey Hill Rd. will be blocked near the schools as law enforcement continues the investigation.
