EUGENE, Ore. - The official grand opening celebration for the WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza is Saturday. | Schedule of events
The skatepark itself opened in April and has since become a neighborhood fixture.
The event Saturday celebrates the entire urban plaza and park.
The dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy is expected to declare Eugene as “Skate Town, USA”.
Opening Day events start at 10 a.m.
Simultaneously, there will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a bike polo competition, and free skateboarding and biking lessons.
Throughout the day, helmets will be given away while supplies last.
There will be live music, horseshoes at regulation-sized courts, and KidZone activities.
Amenities added to the park during its redevelopment include accessible pathways, bike racks, benches, drinking fountains, energy-efficient lighting, landscaping, free wifi, public art, and areas to accommodate food carts and special events, the City of Eugene said.
Parking is limited.
Shuttles from the EWEB parking lots at 4th and Mill street will be available every 15 minutes.
LTD bus routes 40, 51 & 52 all serve the park.
Individuals with a skate deck or bike can ride LTD buses to the park for free from 1 to 8 p.m.
Bike valet parking will be available at at the northern-most end of the park.
