EUGENE, Ore. - A photo of a unique-looking University of Oregon football helmet design labeled "Spring Game Helmet" sparked a viral firestorm on social media Tuesday.
The cyber-camoflauge design showed up on a Facebook fan page for Duck running back De'Anthony Thomas, which lent the image some authenticity.
And the Ducks aren't exactly known for wearing the same uniform twice. Ever.
Facebook and Twitter lit up about the design.
But the helmet looks unique for a reason: it's a one-of-a-kind.
A Springfield man made the helmet last Thanksgiving, applying "sno-digi camo" graphics to an all-white Duck helmet.
He put the helmet up for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $399 and a Buy It Now price of $699.
The item description notes the helmet is one-of-a-kind.
"Spring Game 2013??" the description reads.
The man who made the helmet contacted KVAL News after the flurry of social media attention Tuesday. He told KVAL Sports he appreciates that people like his design but expressed concern that the University of Oregon might come after him for mashing up an unofficial Duck design.
