Springfield PD: Man hit and killed by drunk driver

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A man was hit and killed by a drunk driver early Saturday morning while he walked along Highway 126 in Springfield, police said.

Officials reported that Kiyallah Heatherstone, 33 of Fall Creek, was driving east on Hwy 126 when at around 2:36 A.M. he hit a pedestrian at the intersection of 52nd Street.

The pedestrian, later identified as 33-year-old Travis Alverson of Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical responders.

Officers said that Heatherstone appeared to have been drinking before the crash.

Heatherstone was booked at the Lane County Jail on DUII and reckless driving charges, as well as a charge of first-degree manslaughter, police said.
