Police, passersby lift car off 'intoxicated' man run over in road
Medics attend to the injured pedestrian

EUGENE, Ore. - The first car clipped the man as he ran across the busy road in the heart of Eugene.

The second car ran him over.

Police and passersby teamed up to lift the car off the man, and medics rushed him to the hospital.

Investigators - who said 38-year-old Michael Wilburn was intoxicated by alcohol when he ran across West 7th Avenue around 2 p.m. - had the road open again by 5:30 p.m.

Wilburn underwent surgery and was in critical condition on Wednesday.

An air ambulance responded to the scene but appeared unable to land, and a witness saw police deploy red crime scene tape instead of just yellow warning tape. A ground ambulance rushed Wilburn to the hospital, which was having issues of its own.

EUGENE, Ore. - A pedestrian hit by a car was rushed to the hospital, and police expect 7th Avenue from Jefferson to Madison streets to remain closed while they investigate what happened, the Eugene Police Department said.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. Medics had rushed the pedestrian from the scene in an ambulance less than 20 minutes later, according to a reporter on scene.

An air ambulance helicopter could also be seen looking for a place to land, the reporter said.

Police expected the road to open by 5:30 p.m. after an extended closure for the Major Collision Investigation Team investigation.

"Initial investigation indicates that an intoxicated male pedestrian in his 30s ran across the road and was clipped by a vehicle in the #2 lane, then went down under a vehicle in the #1 lane, where he was pinned," police said Tuesday afternoon. "That vehicle, a Toyota Avalon was driven by an out-of-town female in her 60s. A witness to the crash brought a floor jack over to help raise the vehicle in an attempt to get the pedestrian out from under the vehicle.

"EPD officers and several citizens were able to lift the vehicle enough to pull the victim out from under the car. The pedestrian has been transported to a local hospital by ambulance, where he is undergoing treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

"Names of the involved are not expected to be released today."
