EUGENE, Ore. - A police officer shot and killed a man who ran from a traffic stop Wednesday as the two struggled on the grounds of Churchill High School.

Police identified the deceased as Christopher Lee Koziatek, 44, of Eugene.

Officer Aaron Johns, 40, stopped Koziatek as he rode a red Honda mini-bike down Bailey Hill Road.

Johns took a large knife and a hatchet off Koziatek's person before the man bolted towards Churchill High School, police said.

As Johns chased Koziatek, the officer called for emergency back-up and a lockdown of Churchill High School.

Johns caught Koziatek, who physically resisted and assaulted the officer, police said. Witnesses described seeing the two fighting or wrestling.

Koziatek, who was also armed with a handgun, was shot by Johns and died at the scene, police said.

The officer was evaluated at a local hospital and released with no serious physical injuries, police said.

Lane County's Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team responded to investigate. The district attorney expects to have a ruling on whether the shooting was justified by next week.
