Suspicious powder at Oregon State Capitol not hazardous

SALEM, Ore. – A hazardous materials team was called in to check out a suspicious powder found in an office at the Oregon State Capitol on Wednesday afternoon.

After about 45 minutes they determined the powder did not pose a threat..

The office is part of a suite of offices that belongs to Governor John Kitzhaber’s staff. The powder was found Wednesday afternoon.

Police said all employees in the area were told to stay in their offices during the investigation.

Around ten employees were eventually given the all-clear at 5:15 p.m.

State police troopers are investigating where the powder came from.
