EUGENE, Ore- The University of Oregon started a scholarship aimed at rewarding high-achieving high school students with scholarship money. University staff said they want to give Oregon residents the opportunity to get a higher education even if they can't afford it.

"In smaller areas like the rural parts of Douglas County, we tend to see financial barriers as being the primary reason why students aren't able to enroll at a place like the U of O and we are trying to work with them to meet them in the middle," said Assistant Director of Admissions David Van Der Haeghen.

The goal is to visit every high school in the state and inform qualifying students about the scholarship opportunity.

"We believe very strongly that high achieving students in different parts of the state of Oregon, especially is rural areas, will benefit because those are students that have perspectives that we need on this campus. Those are students that have things to talk about that we may not normally hear," added Van Der Haeghan.
