Trooper: Driver knew he hit a person before fleeing fatal accident

EUGENE, Ore. - A driver charged in a fatal hit-and-run that left a volunteer firefighter dead told a state trooper he fell asleep at the wheel and woke up when he heard a thump and saw a person falling off the side of his truck.

Bryson Michael Krissie, 18, died June 6 on 30th Avenue near Lane Community College when he was hit by a truck that left the scene.

The man charged with hitting and killing Krissie before driving away told police he knew he had hit a person, according to a sworn affidavit filed in the case.

Jason Allen Manske, 33, told police he got scared because he didn't have insurance - and was on probation, according to a sworn affidavit from Oregon State Police Trooper Blaine Hlebechuk.

Manske has not been convicted of any crime in connection with the case as of July 6, 2012. He is out of jail on GPS monitoring due to county budget cuts awaiting the resolution of his case.
