Two men injured in Salem drive-by shooting
SALEM, Ore. – Two men were shot in a drive-by shooting outside a party in Salem early Saturday morning.
It happened at around 12:30 a.m. outside a house in the 1000 block of Arabian Avenue SE.
A car drove by the house, where many people were gathered outside, and fired numerous shots, according to Don Thomson with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
David Chavez, Jr., 26, was shot while he was seated inside his Honda Civic. He was taken to a Salem hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Deputies also found bullet holes in two nearby homes.
While detectives were at the hospital, a second gunshot victim arrived at the emergency room. Robert A. Apodaca, 26, drove himself to the hospital. His injuries are unclear.
Detectives believe at least one person returned fire at the suspects’ car during the shooting, Thomson said. It’s unclear how many shots were fired.
The suspect vehicle is described as a four-door, white or light-colored Malibu type car. It may have bullet holes in it.
Witnesses could not provide a description of the suspects inside the car.
Anyone who sees the suspect vehicle or has information about the shooting is asked to call the Marion County Sheriff's Office 24-hour number at (503) 588-5032.

Think we need to differenciate between random mass shootings, which generally are committed by people with some degree of mental illness (or just plain psychotic), and there are generally some pre-incident indicators; and violent street crime. The two types of incident are very different in both motivation and execution. Random (probably not the best term, but I'm not the one who named these things) mass shootings are generally motivated by some internal issue (a mental break for lack of a better term). While violent street crime (the stuff we are more aware of; ie. drive by shootings, gang violence, robbery, etc....), are generally motivated by monetary gains or in this case (I'm guessing? I do not know the details of this incident beyond the article) some street rivalry. Banks get robbed because there is money there, drug dealers become victims of home invaision robberies because they presumably have money and drugs in their home, street gangs are victims of drive by shootins (generally) because they have somehow offended a rival. However, random mass shootings happen because? It's not for money, you don't shoot up a school, movie theater, shopping mall, etc. for money, the location didn't somehow infringe on your set...Â

Anyway, my point was simply that the two very different types of crime are committed by very different people who are motivated by very different reasons... If we (as people) want to discuss them, we need to not mix them, because they are very different (apples to oranges).
