EUGENE, Ore. - United Airlines plans to discontinue service from the Eugene Airport to Portland International Airport started September 1.

"We weren't really surprised by this change just because it is a smaller gage aircraft that has been phased out of many markets," said Cathryn Stephens with the Eugene Airport. "We anticipated it would happen in our market at some point."

There are currently seven flights daily between Eugene and Portland.

After United cuts the route, there will be fewer options.

"We'll still have four daily trips to Portland and that'll be on Alaska Air," Stephens said.

Travelers who take the commuter flight said they're dissapointed in the decision.

"You're just causing everyone in this area a little more hardship to fly to wherever they need to go if they're going to portland or catching a connection flight," said passenger Bob Frazier.

"I understand from their perspective they're trying to save money, but in the same respect it's not very fair to the people," said passenger Tami Harville.

United will also be phasing out service between Portland and Seattle and Portland and Redmond.

If you're itching to get out of town, Allegiant Air plans to resume direct service from Eugene to Honolulu on June 7.
