Vacationer dies while driving south of Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. -- A man died while behind the wheel Friday afternoon when he and his wife were taking Interstate 5 as a part of a vacation route.

Eugene police said that Bruce Burns, 56 from Monticello, Indiana, was driving a rented 2012 Chevy Impala northbound on I-5 while on vacation with his wife. The couple reached milepost 185 (between Creswell and South Eugene) at around 2:30 p.m. when Burns suddenly lost consciousness, causing the car to veer toward the center median.

His wife grabbed the steering wheel and brought the car safely to a stop. Other passing drivers stopped to help the couple until emergency responders arrived.

Burns was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that an apparent medical emergency caused Burns to lose consciousness. No one else was reported to have been injured in the incident.
