EUGENE, Ore. - What is the capital of the Cape Verde Islands?

Tor Parsons knows.

The Roosevelt Middle School student heads to Washington, D.C., in May to compete in the National Geographic Bee, a spelling bee-style event based on locations around the globe.

"As young as kindergarten I would scan maps looking for train tracks," Parsons said. "I didn't realize how much information I had subconsciously downloaded into my brain."

His journey to the national finals started at his school, where he won the local competition.

He took part in the statewide competition last Friday, beating out 100 of his peers.

"It felt great," Parsons said. "I didn't know then that I was going to win.

"I'm quite excited, not because I'm going to this prestigious geography thing but just because I'm going to Washington, D.C."

His coach Eric Johannsen met Parsons in one of his classes last year.

"He'd always come in and quiz me and others every day," Johannsen said.

The winner of the national final brings home a $50,000 scholarship along with a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

So as for Cape Verde Islands?

"Praia," Parsons said.
