PORTLAND, Ore. – Three people pulled a woman from her smoking car before it burst into flames after the car rolled down a steep 40-foot embankment Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The wreck and rescue happened on Highway 47 north of Highway 26, according to Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

Andrea Hammond, 22, was driving south on Highway 47 when the car traveled off the road and rolled at least twice down the embankment, Hastings said.

Larry Elverud, a Washington County Land Use and Transportation Department employee, and two unidentified citizens pulled the injured woman out of the car.

One minute later, the car was engulfed in flames, Hastings said.

Hammond was taken to OHSU for treatment. Her injuries are not life-threatening, police said. She was wearing a seat belt.
