Eugene veteran: 'Words cannot express how grateful I am'

EUGENE, Ore. - Contractors, builders and the City of Eugene are transforming some homes that have seen better days into low-cost housing for veterans.
Serving those who have served our country--with low cost housing for veterans.
That's the whole idea being the Veterans Housing Project.
"I can't believe that. I'm awestruck. I don't know what to think," said Garrett Jubie at his soon-to-be rental home.
The Oregon National Guard member and his girlfriend, Katie Elder (also in the Oregon Guard) are within weeks of moving in to this small house near Willamette High School in the Bethel neighborhood.
They'll get low rents for up to 2 years. St. Vincent de Paul worked with the Bethel School District to save the homes from foreclosure. Then contractors stepped in, big time.
Mike Dotson of the Neil Kelly contracting company told KVAL News, "I've called on people to supply materials and they say don't ask us--we won't ask you for money.
Here it is, do what ever you want with it."
Roof work, new floors, tile work inside--all was donated.
Jubie, an Iraq war veteran, says with his new job and this rental, the road to readjustment has become a lot smoother.
"Words can not express how grateful I am of all the people that have put work into this place and just offered their time for no cost. You can't put a price on that," says Jubie.
It's certainly not the end of the program. The Home Builders Association hopes to boost the number of homes to about 25 in Eugene-Springfield in the next few years.
Thursday's dedication included speeches by Eugene officials and comments from Master Sgt. Phillip Jacques of the Oregon National Guard, who summed up by saying, "Eugene cares. The community cares."

I wish they could expand their services to helping severely wounded veterans who need to buy a house and can afford to pay for an average house but will need a specially adapted house to meet the health needs of the veteran. We don't need a free house, we need a probably $400,000 and can pay $200,000. Just waiting for a miracle to happen.
Don't go all PTDS and take out the High School kids.Â
