3 hurt when wrong-way driver crashes head-on into car

EUGENE, Ore. -- A crash involving a wrong-way driver injured 3 people and closed the eastbound lanes of the Randy Pape' Beltline Highway at River Road early Sunday morning while police conducted a crash investigation.

Emergency crews responded to the crash just before 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officials said that Bryan Andrew Bierce, 25, of Fresno, Calif., was driving his Saab the wrong way on Beltline in the eastbound lanes when he hit a Suzuki head-on between the Northwest Expressway and River Road Exits.

Bierce and the driver of the Suzuki, 60-year-old Danny Thomas Jones of Sandy, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Suzuki, Chanreuang Jones, 58, of Sandy, was seriously injured in the crash.

Police said they suspect alcohol played a role in the crash.

The roadway was closed until just after 11 a,m, Sunday as police investigators reconstructed the crash.

The Oregon Department of Transportation set up a detour around the crash scene that re-routed eastbound traffic off Beltline via the River Road exit. Cars were re-directed back on Beltline at the River Road on-ramp.
