Mother arrested for allegedly stabbing infant daughter
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A 6-week-old girl is in stable condition after she was stabbed numerous times.
The child's mother, 24-year-old Danielle Mailloux, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after Kern County deputies were called Sunday night to the 1300 block of Crawford Street.
"We believe that a kitchen knife was used," Kern County Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt told Eyewitness News. "A kitchen-type knife."
Neighbor Leo Rodriguez said he was going by the home Sunday evening when he heard a lot of yelling.
"This lady just kept yelling, and, about two minutes later, I saw cops all over the place and an ambulance," Rodriguez said.
Pruitt said it was the baby's father who called authorities when he got home and found the injured infant. He didn't know when the baby was stabbed and how much later it was that the father came home.
Another child was in the home at the time and has been placed with relatives, according to Pruitt. It's believed that is a daughter, about 6 years old.
Eyewitness News has obtained reports showing the mother was investigated in 2009 when she had a baby stillborn. Bakersfield police were called because of unusual circumstances surrounding the death, according to the Kern County coroner's office report.
Officers questioned both the mother and father, and an autopsy was performed by the coroner's office.
Their report concluded the infant died because of drug exposure.
"After completing an investigation in conjunction with the Bakersfield Police Department, the death of Addysan Angel Mailloux was been determined to be a homicide due to maternal substance abuse," the report reads.
The report also stated the infant was found to have levels of methamphetamine.
Police said they consulted with the Kern County District Attorney's Office at that time, and it was determined the infant's death did not meet the legal definition of murder of a fetus. The mother was never charged with the death.
"There was much conversation at the time," police Sgt. Mary DeGeare told Eyewitness News. She said investigators discussed whether they could go after the person who had supplied the mother with drugs during her pregnancy.
However, DeGeare said Mailloux would not cooperate with that.
Leo Rodriguez said the family has lived on Crawford Street for a year or so, and he would see people come and go from the small house.
Another neighbor said the family seemed very quiet and kept to themselves. He also saw the commotion on Sunday night.
"They brought the mother out in cuffs," that neighbor described. "She was like blank, had no expression on her face, and they put her in the car."
The baby was taken by ambulance first to Kern Medical Center and then transferred to Children's Hospital Central California in Madera.
The sheriff's office didn't say what led the mother to allegedly stab her daughter. Pruitt said the baby was stabbed in the upper body.
"But none of the wounds are life-threatening," Pruitt said. "It appears the child is going to recover from the injuries."
