Ariz. sheriff aims to put armed posse at schools
PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona sheriff has announced plans to deploy an armed volunteer posse to protect Phoenix-area students in the wake of the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio tells KTVK-TV he has the authority to mobilize private citizens to fight crime but hasn't talked to specific districts.
He says he doesn't plan to put posse members inside schools but will have them posted around the perimeters.
Arpaio is known as one of the nation's most high-profile supporters of strict U.S.-Mexico border policy.
His plan announced Thursday comes after two other Arizona officials released ideas for boosting school security.
Attorney General Tom Horne proposed firearms training for one person in each school. And Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu proposed training multiple educators per school to carry guns.

Eliminate Gun Free Zones. That is the only reasonable answer politically, not simply allowing a "special class" of people to carry. Many schools already resemble prisons, I don't think making the environment even more prison-like is the answer. I don't have any stake in this fight however, because I wish to see government schools abolished entirely.
This is the same scumbag that imprisons kids, screw him. You idiots are just that idiots, we don't need guns in school. Columbine wasn't prevented and they had an armed guard there. What happens if they accidentally shoot an unarmed kid? You realize you are giving someone the power to KILL YOUR CHILDREN. Â Stop letting crazy people get guns and close the gun show loopholes.Â
Way to go Sheriff Joe!  No barrier  no security system every designed will stop the transgressor unless it is backed up by trained, armed personnel.  This is a good example of the armed citizenry acting to protect society against the insane . . . (which includes, unfortunately, includes Senator Dizzy Di).
Good Idea... and its one that wont cause a shooting revolution... I like it.
