NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - Officials in Idaho have released video of a dog attacking a police officer during a welfare check at a home in Nampa on Monday afternoon.
Sgt. Tim Randall with Nampa Police said the attack led an officer to shoot and kill one of the dogs. Neither officer was hurt.
The incident was caught on video by a small camera officers wear and activate during responses to calls, Randall said.
Police said two officers went to a residence Monday afternoon to check on two juvenile children.
When they arrived, police said they found the side door of the home partially open and were soon attacked by two large dogs. One of the offers fired his handgun and killed one dog.
One dog bit through an officer’s gun belt and punctured a mace canister holder, Randall said. Neither officer was injured and the children were found to be unharmed in the home.
Nampa animal control officers identified the dogs as a Mastiff- pit bull mix and a Chesapeake - pit bull mix.
No charges have been filed and the incident is still under investigation.
Sgt. Randall said its the third time in five years officers have shot a dog while on a call, but this was the first time a dog was killed.
"It seemed like the officer felt really bad - he was shaking his head," said Larry Carver, who was at the home and described the pet as a family dog. "At the moment he panicked and started firing - and I don't think that was right."
Police say the officer acted accordingly.
"Our officers are allowed and trained to use deadly force when they feel their life is in danger, " said Deputy Chief Craig Kingsbury. "And in my opinion it's what this officer felt."
He said all Nampa police and animal control officers have been using the wearable cameras for the last two years.

I would have done the same thing.
Good shoot.
He's a pit bull owner. Would you really expect him to take any responsibility for his dogs actions. These people are as useless as their animalsÂ
@Dikweed Wow what a biased opinion... Am I wrong or were these officers on these dogs property?? Just because some one owns a pitbull does not mean they are irresponsible. It is people like you that like to judge and put people in categories that makes this world so messed up.
Â
@Katie Hughes-Geus You can call it what u want, but the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of pit bull owners are total freakin morons.
@Katie Hughes-Geus  @Dikweed Would you feel the same way if your child went to the door selling cookies and it was attacked??  Or is your opinion bias because he was a police officer??  You don't fool anyone.
WHAT???? Â That dog attacked the officer..... Â And the guy said...."At the moment he panicked and started firing - and I don't think that was right." Â Well, if some stupid azz dog bites me, the dog best run!! Â Especially if I had been in the cops shoes. Â The cops ID themselves so the owner knew who was there. Â The owner has something to hide if he has that kind of dogs living there. Â Most people when someone comes to the door they put their dogs in a room. Â He didn't. Â
Â
NOPE! Â Don't feel sorry for the owner.
Â
Glad the officers are okay. Â
Â
@ThinkAgain yes, the owner of the dog does take resposibility and says its a good dog, he also says he trained it to be protective,And, if you notice, thos dog is Lunging at him, not just "jumping up" like the owner says he was.The dog was attacking the officer.I dont blame him for firing.
before you post, you should take a look that KVAL, forgot to mention!!

@ThinkAgain Whatever. Said dog owner was probably told that he is liable for the bite.  He's trying to avoid a lawsuit.
Bad piggies.
@Nogod Let's not go there. If a dog attacks me I will kill it. AND I LOVE DOGS. I have the right to protect myself.Â
That dog got what it had coming! The police announced themselves at least twice- the dog WAS straight up attacking the officer and its owner did not have it under control in the least. Sad the dog had to be shot but what did the owner expect?Â
Police officers take chances every day...too bad the dogs owners and children did not respect them...
Mr. Carver, you don't think it was right that he shot the dog? What do you think he should have done? Let the dog continue its' attack?
@UsaidWHAT Mr carver thinks that you shouldnt worry much those dogs dont eat a lot
