BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - One person has been taken to the hospital after a city bus crashed into the Idaho Power building in downtown Boise on Monday morning.
The crash happened just before 7 a.m. near 13th Street and Main.
Boise Police say there were about a dozen people on the bus at the time of the crash. The rider taken to the hospital suffered non-life threatening injuries. Photos
"(There's) a lot of damage to the building, which is a shame I love this building, but I've never seen a bus crash into a building before," said Jaeson Rogers, an Idaho Power employee.
The bus came to a stop with its front hanging off a steep ledge.
Rogers rides the bus (he wasn't on the one that crashed) every day. He said it was nerve-wracking going to work just hours after the bus rammed the side of his workplace.
"I'm going to have to make sure I go in and sit on the other side of the building," he said.
Boise Fire says the driver told officials the brakes on the bus stopped working. After plowing over Main Street, the bus went over a curb, and then rammed into the building.
"That was pretty quick thinking on his part because there were cars parked in front of him, at the light so once he realized he wouldn't be able to stop in time, he took a vast (number) of actions and was just able to get through the parking lot I think without hitting any individuals or any vehicles," said Mark Canopsis, ValleyRide spokesman.
It's been about seven or eight years since there's been a crash like this with a bus.
"It's pretty rare, for the most part we have a very stellar safety record," Canopsis said.
A structural engineer said the pillar that was destroyed was not load-barring. The area above the crash was evacuated, according to Idaho Power.
The trail of debris left by the bus covered approximately 100 yards, from Grove to Main Street. The bus ran over and sheered off five trees, all approximately 10 - 12 inches in diameter, two light poles and an ACHD sign before hitting the building and coming to a stop.
BPD says it could be a lengthy investigation.
