'Did you just say President Obama is a Muslim?'
TEL AVIV, Israel - “The problem is Obama is a Muslim.”
I waited for the punchline, or at least a sly grin.
None came.
“Wait,” I asked. “Did you just say President Obama is a Muslim?”
“Yes of course,” my host answered. “Everybody knows that.”
This was not what I expected to hear on this trip to Israel, not at all.
I came to Israel to get a feel for the Israeli mood on the latest situations in Syria and Iran. With the American presidential conventions in full swing, it also seemed like a good idea see how the Israelis feel about our presidential candidates, especially in light of the reported tension between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Obama. I’m still working on the former question, but I knew the answer to the latter one within a couple of hours of arriving.
Full disclosure: Back in 1977 I dropped out of college and took off for Europe with a camera, a backpack and about $150 in my pocket (you could fly to Brussels on Laker Air for about a hundred bucks). I ended up living on a kibbutz in Israel for almost eight months. And no, I’m not Jewish.
I returned to Israel in 1982 as a freelance photojournalist and traveled up the Green Line in Beirut to photograph the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) push the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) out of Lebanon.
In 1984 I flew directly into Beirut, again as a freelance photojournalist, to report on the Multi-National Forces, which included the British, the French, the Italians and the U.S. Marines, as they attempted to bring peace and stability to the region.
They failed, by the way.
It had been nearly three decades since I had been in the region, and the current round of threat and counter-threat between Israel and her neighbors seemed a good enough justification to come back and have a look around.
Much has surprised me, like the deep distrust of President Obama, for instance.
I lived on a kibbutz near the ancient fortress of Caesarea, built for Herod the Great in 25 BCE just about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. It’s a charming place, its citizens educated but mostly middle class.
My host took me back to his house and introduced me to his extended family, nearly all of whom were born after my last visit to the region.
After much general greeting and awkward attempts to learn and pronounce names, I asked the gathered group, some dozen Israelis ranging in age from 18 to 60, both male and female, what Obama’s religion is. All agreed he is a Muslim, and were surprised I didn’t know. No amount of explanation on my part made the least little dent in their point of view.
Obama is a Muslim. End of story.
And he's deeply distrusted by Israelis.
“You are not here to write something that will help Obama get re-elected, are you?” one family member asked with near horror in her voice.
Not my job one way or the other, I explained.
I did, however, believe it was my job to at least set the record straight: President Obama is a Christian.
I was happy to repeat it several times, slowly even. Obama. Is. A. Christian. Doing so, it turned out, was a complete waste of time.
I have now been here several days, and it has become a slightly amusing yet frustrating little game. Admittedly this is a non-scientific survey, yet I ask everyone I meet – soldiers, waiters, waitresses, people on the street, taxi drivers – what Obama’s religion is.
I have asked at least 100 people this simple question.
So far only one person has given the correct answer, and he is an immigrant from Chicago.
After the first several people offered their belief that our president is a secret Muslim, and after it became clear nothing I could say would change their mind on the issue, I began to ask for their evidence.
Some of it is plausible yet wrong; some of it is ridiculous and wrong; and some of it is so wrong it didn’t make any sense at all.
Here is a sample:
1. You can not have the name Hussein unless you are Muslim. As absolute proof of this, no one could think of anyone they had ever met named Hussein who wasn’t a Muslim. And as even further proof of this, it was made clear to me that when the president’s wife Michelle Obama gave her speech at the convention, which they all agreed was a good speech, she never once used the president’s middle name. (Aha!)
2. Unlike presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was here recently, President Obama has not bothered to grace Israel with his presence for years (if you are a concerned Democrat, you may want to mention this to David Axelrod).
3. President Obama’s father was a Muslim, and the Muslim faith is patriarchal, unlike the Jewish faith, which is matriarchal. His father was a Muslim, ergo Barack is a Muslim whether he wants to admit it or not or even if he wants to be or not (not sure if a blood transfusion or gene therapy would reverse this, and I didn’t bother to inquire).
4. Obama spent his entire formative years in a madrassa in Indonesia. (Actually, Obama only spent 1967 to 1971 in Indonesia, and although he attended a Muslim school, it was not a madrassa. On the other hand, as they are quick to point out, it was a Muslim school.)
5. President Obama hasn’t bombed the bejeezus out of Teheran yet (wait, that may have been a neo-con who told me that one…).
And perhaps my favorite so far:
6. “If it walks like a Muslim duck, and it quacks like a Muslim duck, and it looks like a Muslim duck…”
In the few days I have been here, I have traveled to Tel Aviv, have been up and down the coast, have gone all the way up to the border with Syria and also over to the border with Lebanon.
Everywhere I stop I ask people what Obama’s religion is.
The answer is always the same: Muslim. Obviously.
At some level this is serious stuff.
“Of course Obama is Muslim,” a waitress at a café told me, “but what difference does it make? We can’t vote in your election.”
True enough. But last time I heard there is a powerful Jewish lobby tossing around a fairly large sum of money to influence the election outcome (not to mention some guy named Sheldon Adelson, who happens to have a bank account that seems to defy the concept of infinity). I doubt the Jewish lobby is supporting the candidate the entire country of Israel seems to believe has a keffiyeh hidden in his closet.
When I was up north, I stopped in at Mount Bental, a former strategic army outpost that is now a popular tourist destination with a 1,161 meter (3,800 foot) summit that overlooks the Syrian border.
A busload of retired folks from the U.S. of A. arrived and I struck up a conversation with a couple of gentlemen from California.
We talked about Duck football and Coach Chip Kelly.
After I left, it hit me I hadn’t asked them if Obama is a Muslim.
I should have.
There is at least a 50-50 chance they would have gotten it right.
I hope.

I have always looked up to Abraham Lincoln. I am a Muslim and I have regarded him as a good person who died for a good course since I was in my teen years. No one could change this from my heart. If Obama wanted to be a Christian let him be. Who needs God anyway?????   Correction - God doesn't need us at all. Stay tune to your believe because there is no force in religion. Each and everyone of us will have to face the Almighty alone! later. Therefore, let's take care of ourselves better before that day.
When you return home after your daily assault on the constitution, observe your family, a wife, and children. You propose to the public that abortion is to be on-going, you propose that men marry men. Should you have married a man, you would have no children. Should your wife aborted her festus,(s) you would have the same, NO CHILDREN! THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE LEADING THIS COUNTRY, PERHAPS YOU ARE A/C,D/C AS WELL AS A LEFTEST SOCIALIST/MUSLIM.
Hi Guys, I've found this interesting! Check it out! http://threereligions.blogspot.com/
Obama is probably not a muslim (muslims follow Islam, which states that the only G-d is Allah. Obama obviously worships himself, not Allah, so he cannot be muslim).
Â
However, in Audacity of Hope, Obama clearly - and unequivocally - stated that "I will stand with the Muslims should political winds shift in an ugly direction." So, he might as well be a muslim, as far as Israel and every other country in the world (including America) is concerned. Therefore, even if he is a pretend-Christian (Christians don't believe in worshipping yourself, either), it still makes no difference. For all practical purposes, he might as well be called a muslim, since he supports them over all others.
The article says.... Â "And he's deeply distrusted by Israelis". Â I think he is distrusted by many, many Americans. Â I know I don't trust him. Â Â
@Trevor said "Obama claims to be a Christian, but his actions and words do not prove that he is one. Since he lies and deceives in so many areas of his life, but especially as we've seen in politics where appearances and claims of Americana is important, it's reasonable to say that his claim about being a Christian may merely be a charade. We cannot know for sure unless further actions indicate it."
Â
Trevor, are you kidding? Have you noticed the so called "Christian Right" in this country? They have become the Christian Wrong! They are in no way shape or form following the example of Jesus Christ ( Peace Be Upon Him)! And politicians, especially, Republican politicians, are you JOKING?! Where is your questioning of Romney and Ryan as Christians? Would you like to go back to the Republican Convention to prove just how many lies Ryan stated in just one speech? You don't need to go any further!
Â
Please stop following the hype about President Obama's Religion. Really, do you honestly believe you are in a position to decide for another person what his/her religion is? Don't you think a person knows their own Religion? Do you think I have the right to decide for you what your Religion is?Â
Â
I would think you would know your own Religion. I hope so anyway. And since I don't know you from Adam, I don't think I should be in a place to decide what your Religion is. Why should any of us be in a place to decide what the Religion of our President is? I think he knows his own Religion. And I think if you walk into a Christian Church, and you worship as those in the Christian Church worship, it is only logical that you are a part of that Christian Religion. Regardless of what anyone else DECIDES for you!Â
Â
@Cuulmann69, Thank you! No one SHOULD care what President Obama's Religion is! Unfortunately, you're either one of "us" or one of "them" is the current thought on religion. Then again, the lines aren't always clear who is the "us" and who is the "them".Â
@Fancy Jack, Shame on you! If you are truly Muslim, you know that anyone that believes Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him) is the son of God Almighty is not a Muslim. It doesn't matter if his father is Muslim or not. HIS Belief is what determines HIS religion! It is true that we believe a child follows the Father's religion. However, if that child is raised as a Christian because his Muslim father didn't do his duty and take care of his family and raise his own children, then a child becoming a Christian is not just possible, but inevitable (not to mention his father wouldn't be much of a Muslim, would he now?!).Â
Â
I hope people stop looking at President Obama's Religion, and for that matter, get over his color, and look at him as the President of the United States of America. He is doing all that he can since former President Bush has dug our country into the deepest Economic Recession since the Depression. He has had to do it for the last two years with the Congress of "No", who came straight out and said that their Number One Priority was GETTING THIS PRESIDENT VOTED OUT OF OFFICE! No, their Number One priority was not getting our Economy back on track. No, not getting legislation passed to get people back to work. No, not getting funding for our ailing schools. No, not taking care of our elderly by shoring up Medicare and Social Security. JUST GETTING RID OF THIS PRESIDENT. Personally, I think we should vote THEM ALL out of office, and get rid of THEM! How about we vote people into office that are actually concerned with more than what our President LOOKS LIKE! Â Â
Â
@Plain Jane  @Fancy a PARAGRAPH WELL WRITTEN, WELL SAID. THERE IS MUCH WISDOM HERE. YOU HAVE MY VOTE
@Plain Jane I don't care what Obama's religion is, the man has no Honor. With no Honor there is no truth. He does not deserve to be the president of the USA, and frankly I can't recall having a president with honor for a long time now. We need to have honor and truth back in the USA. If we have that, the rest will take care of itself.
@souptonuts  @Plain Find a man who has courage, honesty, is above reproach, and represents ALL people, with great honor & truth, and he will have my vote! Check out HEAVEN.
What question is this: "WHAT IF Obama was Muslim? Is there anything wrong with being Muslim in this country?" This is precisely what General Colin Powell said on Meet the Press on October 19, 2008. Flip the question. Imagine Obama's dad was "Jewish," but he was Christian, and you have a chorus of people saying, "Obama is a JEW!" Would anyone really ask that question? And if they did, wouldn't they be blasted with the dreaded "anti-Semitic" label? WHY then attacking someone just for "being Muslim" is so acceptable?
@cuulmann69 Spoken like a true Muslim.
As a Muslim myself, there is no doubt to any Muslim that Barrack Hussein Obama is a Muslim, he can recite the entire Quran from memory in Arabic, he cannot recite a single passage from the Bible in Greek, Latin, or English, Christian indeed.Â
@Fancy Jack You are obviously not Muslim. He has never recited the entire Qur'an in public, so how would you know?
@Victor Barrack can recite the entire Quran from memory in arabic, we have a name for such a person in our faith,No Muslim would ever be offended by this accusation. You attack my faith to what purpose? You suggest that because you are unaware that he has this gift that it is false, I would suggest that you are ignorant with regards to Barrack Hussein Obama.
@PatrikD From teleprompter, not memory, it losses something in the translation from Greek, ask the agnostic, they are very keen on these issues.
@Fancy Jack And yet this only took half a minute to google:
Â
Obama speaks at ground zero on 9/11 tenth anniversary recites Psalm 46
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread751462/pg1
"President Obamaâs father was a Muslim, and the Muslim faith is patriarchal, unlike the Jewish faith, which is matriarchal."
Â
Wrong. No such patriarchial/matriarchal lineage exists in Islam. You either practice it or you don't. If you don't, you're not a muslim. You could be the 8th descendant of a conservative practicing islamic family and still not be muslim (simply because you don't practice it). It's really as simple as that.  Â
Obama claims to be a Christian, but his actions and words do not prove that he is one. Since he lies and deceives in so many areas of his life, but especially as we've seen in politics where appearances and claims of Americana is important, it's reasonable to say that his claim about being a Christian may merely be a charade. We cannot know for sure unless further actions indicate it.
@Trevor Thus far, there has been no documented evidence supporting those diehard believers..that he is a muslim.. Just like this guy who did this story.. Gossipmonging gets out of control,,and weakminded individual believe everything they hear with no facts to support the claims
@Whitehawk @Trevor It is odd to me that the Muslims know he is a Muslim and that christians are so befuddled with the Question.
@Fancy Jack Wrong! I'm a Muslim and know that he is not. You would not find a single person in my community of 5,000 people who believe that.
Obama... smokes cigarettes,, or at least he did.. he drinks beer... and he eats pork... all three things are big NO NOs in the islamic faith.. All muslims pray multiple times a day.. another thing Obama does not do...
What most folks fail to understand is he belonged to a fundamental Christian church..Which of course was african american.. and most folks don't really know what goes on in churches that have a congregation that is mostly african american. They definitely are not Islamic!
@Whitehawk but when one is engaged in jihad (stealth or otherwise) it is permitted. I take it you haven't heard of TAYSIR?
@Whitehawk He is a Christian of convenience and a Muslim at heart, the Quran and the Haddith provide for this.
@Fancy Jack There is no such thing. You can't just keep perpetuating a lie in hopes that people will believe you.
Â
@Victor For a moment I thought that we were just two muslims at odds over Obama's faith, that you deny that the Quran and the Haddith provide for this deception exposes you to me as a fraud.
Obama is a Christian Zionist, just as Romney is a Mormon Zionist. The real issue is not their respective religions, but their (foreign) nationalistic superiority views based on an Israel-first foreign policy. AIPAC,ADL,CFR,PNAC and other groups determine all of our country's major decisions, and coincidentally, all of the head figures are mostly American/Israeli dual citizens just like Mitt Romney's entire board of foreign policy advisers. Those are the same people that lead us into the Iraq/Afghanistan occupations and are lobbying for an increase in foreign aid and military spending. You think people are beginning to get it yet?
Seems to me he's a politician. Everyone knows politicians will swing whatever way that will garner them votes. Another phrase for it strikes me as-- political expedience.Â
That said, we know he's not a Christian... aka follower of Jesus.... because he's not explicit in his support of Israel. He's not a muslim because he's not overtly opposed to Israel.Â
The book is real clear-- if you Curse God's People-- Israel, God will curse you. Genesis 12:3. Not exactly something to be excited about. Nor can I think of anyone who is reasonable would actually WANT such a curse.Â
My mother is convinced Obama is a secret Muslim and is just waiting for a second term in order to impose Sharia law. Â On the other hand, the fact that Romney is an 8th generation Mormon, went on a mission, and most likely wears special undergarments that he believes protects him from everything, including bullets, doesn't bother her one bit. Â I guess for some people anything is better than Muslim. Â Personally, I don't care what our president's religious beliefs are as long as they're kept to himself; same as how I prefer it with the rest of the population. Â Don't try to force me to think as you, and I'll do you the same service in return.
@MayraMM When we implement Saria Law, there will be no talk of religious freedom, there is one faith, you can join or suffer the consequences
@MayraMM I agree, the whole purpose of freedom of religion is that you and I get to choose what and who we worship. I feel free to tell you that I am a Christian, but I also feel that you are free to choose any religion you wish including no religion. I believe that is what the constitution means also.
LOL. In my opinion, anyone who honestly believes Obama is a Christian is pretty freakin gullible. His father and stepfather were Muslim, he speaks fondly of Islam and quotes the Quran. I think it was a genuine slip up when in an interview he said "You are absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith" and then had to be corrected by the interviewer to say "Christian." Mind you, I don't blame Obama for claiming to be a practicing Christian; he didn't have a chance in hell of becoming the president as a Muslim. =/ I know the feeling. If you're a Zionist, I can genuinely understand why you'd have a problem with Obama being Muslim... but the Christians who have a problem with it are just ignorant, maaaaaybe borderline mentally deficient. It's the same god you dolts.Â
@PleaseBeSmart His dad was a drunk who didn't practice any religion. His grandfather was a convert to Islam.
@Victor More credible sources than you say otherwise, and quite frankly it doesn't matter to me either way.
@PleaseBeSmart The God of Abram
@PleaseBeSmart I disagree, the God I worship does not believe in killing. Frankly I don't care whether Obama is a muslim or not, what I care about is that he keeps his religion and his running of the country separated. He is supposed to be everyone's president, and if he had to lie about his faith then he is verifiably without honor or truth, something that is needed very badly in this USA, and he should not be the president. Frankly I am not sure that at this point in time there is a person of the stature I am referring to.
@souptonuts You can say that the god you worship is not the god Muslims worship... but the god of Christianity and the god of Islam is the same god. Muslims know this and seem pretty amazed that Christians don't realize it. Sorry to tell you, but if you don't know that you either don't know enough about Christianity, enough about Islam, or both. Unfortunately, it's impossible to keep your religion out of things when running for president, because quite honestly Christians want to know that information and many of them judge from there.Â
@Kelly Kafir *sigh* I said same god, I didn't say Christians and Muslims agreed about all the other details... if they did it would be the same exact religion. Muslims believe Jesus is a prophet and the messiah. And your name calling isn't welcome here Kelly so keep it to yourself.
@PleaseBeSmart  @souptonuts This is a lie. To say Allah has a son is blasphemy... he has no relatives. And Christians believe Jesus was the son of God so sorry PBS, you are an idiot and do not know Islam.
@souptonuts My intent was not to question your knowledge of your faith, specifically. That's why I said OR Islam. You can know everything there is to know about the Christian faith and if you know nothing if the Islamic faith you can't very well know that it's the same god. That's all. I also have no interest in calling you name, as while I don't always agree with you, I also don't think you're a fool and I don't know enough about you to know if you're a bigot or not. Though, I'd argue that everyone is bigoted in some way, so that's not something I tend to hurl as an insult.
@PleaseBeSmart I know all I need to know about my faith, I don't have to read about it, see it or take someone else's word for it. I have faith, and that is all I need. If others need more that is fine. I have what I need and am quite at peace with that feeling. People can call me a fool, a bigot, or whatever they want to call me, I don't care.
@PleaseBeSmart I know I guy who was raised by Jewish parents, served in the IDF, and is Christian.  My parents are Christian; I, on the other hand, am agnostic.  I speak of the bible and koran because I educate myself.  My parents are republicans; I think they're all just puppets and it really doesn't matter who's in office.  My point is that I don't believe as my parents do.  A lot of people don't.  Why should he be the exception?
@MayraMM @PleaseBeSmart I love the agnostic perspective, Michelle Obama reminds me of the second Eve.
@MayraMM I was raised Southern Baptist. I'm Atheist. In no way do I think people have to be the religion they were taught. It's really not just cherry-picking one of the things I said, but the whole picture.
President Obama's religion is categorically "christian;" it is a branch of the faith entitled Black Liberation Theology, which has roots in both christian and muslim dogma. This differs from mainstream protestant christianity in that it teaches "collective salvation" vs. individual salvation. Collective salvation contradicts the more traditional belief of individual salvation (based on an intimately personal relationship with the christian savior) by teaching that individuals are not guaranteed salvation without actions & deeds that bring others into the collective belief system. So, while one can indeed title our President a "christian," it is also a good idea to study the vast differences in christian belief systems. One person's christian Mormon is not another person's christian Jehovah's Witness is not another's christian Baptist and so on. They all hold different dogma's as vitally important and typically don't think the other party is correct...and yes, of course there are exceptions to this and every rule.
