KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- A drunk driver crashed her pickup into a telephone pole when she missed a curve in the roadway because she was busying sending a text message on her cell phone, investigators here believe.

Kristian Bundy, 20, of Klamath Falls, Ore., was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Police arrested her on suspicion of DUII and reckless driving after she was released from the hospital.

Oregon State Police believe Bundy crashed into the power pole after driving off the road and onto the sidewalk in a slight curve in the road. OSP believes Bundy was under the influence and distracted from her driving by text messaging.

Effective Jan. 1, 2010, Oregon law will prohibit, with exceptions, the operation of a motor vehicle while using a mobile communication device which will include a text messaging device or a wireless, two-way communication device designed to receive and transmit voice or text communication.

The crash knocked power lines onto the roadway, blocking it for about five hours until Pacific Power personnel could remove the lines and make needed repairs.
