EUGENE, Ore. - In 2010, Lane County cut funding to many programs, including 4-H.

But this fall, 4-H returned to the area, thanks to support from the community.

“It’s been wonderful. These are programs this community really seems to want and we’ve been getting a lot of support from individuals, businesses, and different community groups,” said Kate Hammarback of Lane County 4-H.

The program offers children hands-on learning activities.

And while it has historically been a way for kids to explore farming and animals, Hammarback said 4-H is much more than that.

“We also teach leadership skills, citizenship, and service,” she said.

Approximately 160 local kids are involved in the program.

This Saturday, they are holding a Tack Sale Fundraiser.

Over 70 businesses will be there, selling products, primarily horse-related.

Proceeds will benefit the 4-H program in the area.

Entry is $2 per person, those under age 8 can enter for free.
