Officials to charge man for starting 500-acre fire

SELAH, Wash. -- Officials plan to charge a man with 2nd degree reckless burning for starting a 500-acre brushfire last week in Selah. Alejandro Olivarez admitted to starting the fire.

The fire broke out late Friday night on the ridge between Selah and Yakima. Crews worked all weekend to contain the fire.

Olivarez told investigators he lighted a luminary and released it into the sky before losing sight of it. He said he found it a short time later and the hillside was on fire.

Officials said he called 9-1-1 to report the fire and told investigators what happened.

Olivarez was arrested for an unrelated crime.
