EUGENE, OR - They say sharing is caring, but can disc golfers respectfully share space at Alton Baker Park with other park users?

The City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division is trying to find out if an 18-hole disc golf course will work in Alton Baker Park. After the first trial day on Thursday, July 28, it's so far so good.

"I hope they put this in, permanently," said Steven Crandall.

"I would love to have a disc golf course here," said Danielle Hirsch. "It's right next to my work. So, I can come on my lunch break and play. You can bring dogs here. It's just another great sport you can do in alton baker park."

The purpose of the temporary course is to solicit that kind of feedback for a proposed permanent 18-hole course in the park.

"All the users have had a chance to weigh in on what an 18-hole disc golf course would do to the park," said City of Eugene Recreation Manager Dave Battaglia.

One concern raised with the proposed disc golf course is potential conflict with other park users, especially walkers and runners on pre's trail. But golfers say the lay-out of the course prevents any possible problems.

"There was a Pre Trail (path) that was right over there, but you don't throw across," said Crandall. "The tee pad is right there and then you threw from the tee pad away from the walk way or the running path, which was good."

There is a nine-hole course at Werstmoreland Park in Eugene as well as courses in Corvallis and Dexter, but a course at Alton Baker would be more than welcomed for Eugene disc golfers.

"Driving distance, gas prices," said Crandall. "Corvallis really isn't that far away, but to go there and back, it's a day trip. Dexter gets boring after a while."

The course is open the next two Thursdays for testing between 10am and 8pm.
