SISTERS, Ore. - A trucker crashed into a tree on Highway 242, a historic Oregon route closed to commercial trucks over 35 feet long.

Derie Patton, 31, of Merrillville, Ind., was not injured. State police cited him for careless driving and violating posted vehicle limits.

Patton was westbound over the historic McKenzie Highway in a 53-foot semi-trailer combo when a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer contacted him and got him to turn around.

As the truck and trailer traveled back towards Sisters, the truck's brakes failed. The truck went off the road on a curve and crashed into a tree.
