Armed but peaceful, activists pledge to fight new gun laws
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds of demonstrators, many armed with high-powered rifles, descended on the Oregon Capitol on Friday in response to calls for stiffer gun restrictions in the wake of recent mass shootings.
Protesters said they wanted to show state lawmakers that they're peaceful, law-abiding gun owners and will fight new gun-control laws.
"We're out there, we're going to fight, and we're not going to lay down and take it," said Arin Forrest, a 33-year-old Portland man who clutched an American flag, an AR-15 rifle slung over his shoulder. "If they're going to take our rights, they need to look us in the eye and tell us why."
Under Oregon law, it's legal to openly carry a weapon in public, and people with concealed handgun licenses can carry their weapons in the Capitol. Most of the demonstrators kept their protest across the street from the statehouse, but a handful brought their weapons indoors.
Craig Jones, 28, of Bend, explored the Capitol with two friends, all three carrying high-powered rifles.
"I felt it's important for us to voice our concerns as taxpayers and registered voters," Jones said, standing in a corridor between offices for senators. "If we want our representatives to represent us, we have to tell them what we want."
The state police had extra troopers on hand, and signs on the Capitol's revolving doors warned visitors that firearms are prohibited without a concealed-carry permit.
Protecting gun-ownership rights is critical to ensuring the government doesn't become tyrannical, said Andy Harris, 45, of Beaverton.
"Thankfully we haven't had to worry about that, but we don't know what the future will hold," said Harris, who carried a home-built AR-15 rifle over his shoulder and a Glock 19 pistol on his hip.
Some Democratic legislators have introduced various bills requiring background checks for private gun sales, banning certain rifles and high-capacity magazines or prohibiting firearms in schools. Democrats control the House and Senate, but legislative leaders have said gun-control measures would be a tough sell with Republicans and centrist Democrats whose support would be needed.
"It's ludicrous that it's being shoved down our throats that we don't have the right to protect ourselves," said Richard Hannan, of Gresham. "The government is out of control."

What Americans have shown about HOW they use their guns is pretty scary. Got a problem? Lost your job your marriage is in the toilet? Get a gun- shoot up your family! Hate your wife? Shoot her! Careless with your gun? Leave it out so your two year old can shoot them self -or sibling. Broke? Use your gun to rob someone! Had a few to drink and arguing with a friend? Shoot him! Mentally ill and want to go out in a hail of bullets? Yes folks 99% of the time these are the ways Americans ACTUALLY use their guns. God bless the Second Amendment.Â
@LifeisGOOD007 Pretty sure your math is off, considering how many gun owners their are compared to the crimes committed while using a gun. Last night police arrested 19 people in ONE city for DUII, I don't see them making any stricter restrictions of vehicles or alcohol. People determined to harm themselves or others will do so no matter the means. They want to go out hoping people remember there name or gain 15 minutes of t.v. fame, they use a gun.
Peaceful so far, anyway. Wait till the real freaks with guns start showing up at these gun rallies. Skinheads, militants, etc. What's the rednecks gonna do about them? Raise your hand if you think these gun rallies are going to end well.
@umpqua rafter Hopefully since they'd all be in one place together, they'll all have thinking errors and kill themselves off (like shaking multiple spiders in a jar) so the real progressives like us can lead humanity into a brighter future.  What a shameful nation we've become!
None of those groups you've listed follow the law anyways to acquire their weapons so why do you think they would attend an event involving laws that they don't care about in the first place? Â Raise your hand if you think this guy's argument was emotionally driven and thus, not well thought out.
 @umpqua rafterÂ
Â
the question is: why would you even think it would turn into a shoot out.Â
Â
That is why YOU shouldn't have a gun. Â You are the dangerous one.Â
Â
The second and fourteenth is not about racism.Â
Â
I don't know why you would make it about being racist.Â
Â
@umpqua rafter My hand is in the air. The people you have to worry about won't be at these rallies. And they will have their guns regardless of any law.
Â
@umpqua rafter That's profiling, and profiling is wrong. Besides it's been so cold out that lots of people have been wearing hats and coats (many with some form of camo on it). How do you know they aren't already at these rallies? I doubt troublemakers want to show up to a place that increases there odds of getting arrested. So far these gun rallies have shown more civility then many other groups (you know who you are) do at there rallies even when it comes to counter protesters.
I fixed it for you:

When we see anti-gun rants from Baldr-dash, we think, "extremist."Â But when it happens from our own elected politicians, somehow that's supposed to symbolize, "freedom"? Â No, this is nothing more than intimidation of our constitutional rights and general public, plain and simple.
When we see images on TV of groups of foreigners brandishing weapons in other nations, we think "extremist." Â But when it happens on our own Oregon state capitol, somehow that's supposed to symbolize "freedom"? Â No, this is nothing more than armed intimidation of our lawmakers and general public, plain and simple.
@Baldr Odinson The number one reason for the 2nd amendment is so we can't be pushed around by our own government.Â
@givupongod  @Baldr Odinson Funny how Baldr forgets about that little comma and the second half of the amendment (, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed). The right of the people to keep and bear arms, not the militia. Two separate entities being covered in one amendment.
@Baldr Odinson  @givupongod I didn't forget the first half, you had already stated it, duh. You would be one to find a militia pesky and ignore the fact that I didn't separate the two statements, merely completed your lacking statement. Both statements do share a relation, it's in regards to people AND militias having the right to bear arms. Learn a little about grammar and you might learn how a comma is designed to join two sentences relating to the topic into one. Now scurry home before another troll steals your bridge.
@Twistthewrist  @givupongod  @Baldr Odinson And funny how you forget those first two phrases.  They aren't separate statements without relations, and you can't just forget that pesky little part about "a well regulated militia".  State militias were made of conscripted citizens ("the people") who had to "keep and bear" their own arms for service.  That's why there's a comma and not a period.  Duh.  But go ahead and twist it to your own purposes. Â
@givupongod  @Baldr Odinson No.  Read Article III section iii of the Constitution.  The 2A was written to give states the right to form a militia AGAINST armed insurrection or foreign invasion, not so you can brandish your assault rifle anywhere you wish.
@Baldr Odinson Try again... Yeah thats some old B.S. Read some true facts for a change.. Your ignorance is no excuse to deny others of thier rights.

Thats the problem you have with communicating whatever it is you're trying to get across. You assume people "think" what you do when you see foreigners brandishing weapons. What you "think" is not what I think. Yes it does symbolize "freedom". Also "our lawmakers" spoke at the event & endorsed it. Have a beautiful day. Â
@Baldr Odinson Open carrying is not brandishing. And lawmakers who would violate the 2nd amendment SHOULD be intimidated.Â
@Baldr Odinson And not ONE person got shot!!!
@Baldr Odinson in·tim·i·date [in-tim-i-deyt] Show IPA verb (used with object), in·tim·i·dat·ed, in·tim·i·dat·ing. 1. to make timid; fill with fear. 2. to overawe or cow, as through the force of personality or by superior display of wealth, talent, etc. 3. to force into or deter from some action by inducing fear: to intimidate a voter into staying away from the polls. Origin: 1640â50;  < Medieval Latin intimidÄtus,  past participle of intimidÄre  to make afraid, equivalent to Latin in- in-2  + timid ( us ) timid, afraid + -Ätus -ate1 Related forms in·tim·i·da·tion, noun in·tim·i·da·tor, noun in·tim·i·da·to·ry [in-tim-i-duh-tawr-ee, -tohr-ee] Show IPA , adjective un·in·tim·i·dat·ed, adjective un·in·tim·i·dat·ing, adjective Can be confused: intimate, intimidate. Synonyms 1. frighten, subdue, daunt, terrify. See discourage.
As defined by the dictionary this definition, alone, ALL protests are a form a intimidation, even your anti-gun protest along the Prefontaine trail is a form of intimidation. The point of a protest is to overwhelming show support for a cause, something you have yet to accomplish. You're just mad that in a HUGE crowd of gun carrying citizens no one was shot and no crimes were committed. Says something about your "gun free zones" and those evil black rifles that kill everyone.
@Twistthewrist @Baldr Odinson Well said, and I might add why don't Baldr move to someplace that has gun control if he or she is so upset with our Constitution. The answer, they really don't want to be suppressed by Government, they just want to be able to spew their nonsense.
And, unlike Occupy, no public urination, defecation, trashing of the nearby parks, spitting on police officers,  or other similar activities.  Maybe if you can afford to pay $900-$1,000 for an AR-15 or a Glock-19 or two you have a different world-view than someone who wants 'the gov'mint' to take care of you. The phrase 'personal responsibility' keeps floating through my mind.
Well, imagine that. Â IF all the people who want to squash the 2nd /14th, just kept their stupid anti american thoughts to themselves, we wouldn't be in this place.Â
Â
More power to the people.Â

Oregon won't tighten gun laws.Â

Best part about living in Harrisburg.... Sheriff Mueller has my back on not enforcing Obama's hate speech.Â
