Jail tax levy vote put off to next week

EUGENE, Ore. - County commissioners put off until next week. a decison whether to put a tax levy to help fund the Lane County Jail before voters on the May ballot
The Lane County Board of Commissioners held what legally could have been the final public hearing on the matter Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. in Harris Hall at the Lane County Courthouse. The board could have voted to put the 5-year levy to voters.
Instead, the measure will come back next week after minor changes to the language.
The proposal calls for 55 cents per $1,000 assessed value. That works out to about $83 per year for the owner of a home assessed at $151,000.
Most of the money would go towards re-opening 120 jail beds. The county currently releases most people accused of crimes before they face trial of post bail.
Ten percent of the levy would go towards juvenile detention.
The tax measure might have company on the May ballot: the City of Eugene is weighing a similar tax levy to support city services, like the library, economic development and other services.
the thing that the city council is not telling us, is if they pass this ballot measure, the plan for the new tax levy is to give them the freedom to remove more money from the general fund for pet projects.this levy is not to add money for jail beds, this new levy will replace money's they would like to spend out of the general fund. there is no written part of the measure that will stop them from doing this
@Durk Strombaucher Way to go Durk! You outed them! As I have said all along this would not fix the problem, because they are not fixing the cause.
Always the same theme;
Administrative personell keep their jobs....bloated pensions
Front line employees are let go (police/firefighter)
New equipment is purchased (cars/trucks/office buildings/office furniture)
They spend every penny..then confidently hold out there hands for more.
The very idea that some folks would even CONSIDER paying more because they think it will help??
Has it EVER helped??? Not in my 50+ years
We were already told it would be $44.00 per person.... which I was fine with. Â .
Â
How here we have this number which makes it 3.5 times the original $44.00.
Â
Why am I paying 2.5 other persons tax bill then?
Â
Unfair way of saying that everyone is paying.. Â Everyone is NOT paying. Â SOME are.Â
EWEB wants more money (the mountain gnomes aren't pissing enough water), the city wants more money and want to hit us up twice, and Lane County wants more money to divert to other uses. Better reallocate that 55 million to safety and quit trying to fleece the goose. We are out of feathers.
I looked up the current budget for lane county public safety, it was around 55 million dollars.. what in the world do they need more money for? I trhink they are not spending it very wisely. they seem to have plenty of money, what in the world are they doing with it.?? . 55 million a year  should equate to ALOT of jail space.
Let's lock up county commissioners ...Wait that won't work they'll just be let out ..What a JOKE
@EUGENE541 We don't need Sheriff Joe we need his budget. If you total all Sheriff Joe's jails there are 8,200 people in custody for a county of 3.9 million residents. Lane County has 135 local beds for a population of roughly 350,000 residents. If Sheriff Joe was saddled with a relative budget scaled to population he would be releasing the vast majority of his inmates!
Â
Sheriff's Joe's tent city in used to house less than 2000 low risk inmates. The other 6,200 inmates are locked up in traditional jail housing. Lane county doesn't need a tent city because there isn't a low risk group of inmates suitable for such housing. At Lane County these inmates were all released shortly after being booked! Sheriff Joe built "tent city" because they filled their regular jails and needed cheap housing. Lane county has room for 500 inmates in the main jail but no funding to staff it. Lane county used to fund a work camp that housed another 120 inmates but is was closed due to a lack of funding.  Â
Â
Now that the Federal money is gone the jail will have to be paid for with local funds.
Though a number of Oregon sheriffs and sheriffs of other states have sided with the people and with our Constitution by agreeing not to enforce patently illegal laws, orders, and regulations from the maniacs in Washington, DC, and Salem, and elsewhere, the Sheriff of Lane County has shied away from the only answer a real law-enforcement officer can take - I will not enforce laws which are repugnant to the Constitution." Â (See Marbury v. Madison for the pertinent ruling.) Â I am reading a book about the triumph of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s and see a lot of resemblances to Obama, Holder, Big Sis and what this regime is doing now. Â The book also reflects that the Nazis succeeded only because people did not say, early on, no you will not violate the law. Â We need to say the same thing to Obama and his minions. Â I will not vote for any law enforcement project where I can not trust the law enforcement officials or their political buddies. Â A Retired Federal Police Officer
Nope. Sorry...when the Oregon State Sheriff's association caved today on taking a stand to defend the 2nd Amendment, they lost any chance that I would vote to give them my money.
What follows is the text of an email sent out by Jason Myers Marion County Sheriff and President of the OSSA:_______________________________Â
Sheriffs,My thanks to all of you who attended (either in person or by phone) our Executive Committee meeting last week. For those of you who could not attend I wanted to let you know what was decided regarding our Association's stance with regard to the 2nd amendment issues. Additionally, we discussed an inquiry we received from US Attorney Amanda Marshall who met with Sheriff Bishop, Sheriff Bettencourt, Holly and I the day before our Executive Committee meeting. This inquiry was regarding our Association's stance and working relationship with our Federal partner agencies. After a very robust conversation on this issue it was the consensus of the Sheriffs present that our Association should not take a formal stance on this issue. At this meeting it was also agreed that I should reach out to US Attorney Amanda Marshall to notify her of our Association position and intent by the Sheriffs present to work collaboratively with our Federal partners agencies. This morning I spoke with U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall and passed along that our Association would not be taking a position on this issue. I further advised Amanda that it would be the intent of the Sheriffs' Association to continue to work collaboratively with our Federal partners agencies. She was appreciative of the phone call. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to give me call.
Jason
WE should bring in the Sheriff Joe Arpaio model to Lane County. Imagine how much we would save, and our loser crack heads would know better than to commit crimes here in Lane County.
I will not be voting for my taxes to go up to pay for this jail- why? Only the poor and middle class are asked to pay. The sheriff needs to be replaced.
@LifeisGOOD007 actually it is property owners that are paying.
@slumlord420  @LifeisGOOD007 Actually it really does effect everyone associated with Eugene. Unless you are locked into a long term contract, all it takes is a landlord giving 30 days or longer notice in change of rental agreement. This effects everyone's wallet to some extent.
@slumlord420  @LifeisGOOD007 non-property owners will end up paying to, in the forms of higher rent since that cost will get passed on.
@Jason Marks  @slumlord420  @LifeisGOOD007 They should make it so non-property owners cant vote on property bond measures, as many of them think they have no skin in the game and it wont affect them. Seems only fair to me.
@Bender  @slumlord420  @LifeisGOOD007 NAW, rent won't automatically increase.  The owners eat it.  And the poor renter belly aches when their rent goes up $5.00
Â
Unfair burden on property owners. Â If you raise their rent $100.00, they will move.. Â Burden back on the property owners AGAIN. Turning a rental unit isn't free. Â Lost rent isn't free.
Â
VOTE NO, find a better way to make sure EVERYONE pays their fair share. Â
@Bender @slumlord420 @LifeisGOOD007 It doesn't really work that way where a business can just pass costs to its customers. Most businesses already charge the max they think they can get for what they are selling. At a certain point people stop buying what you are selling and you are still stuck with the expense.
