Protesters target banks financing tar sands, pipeline

EUGENE, Ore.- Protestors from the Cascadia Forest Defenders took to the streets of Eugene Sunday to voice their concern over the extraction of natural resources and the banks backing these ventures.
“We are protesting against the extraction of the forest, the tar sands in Alberta, Canada and the extraction of coal and other fossil fuel resources,” said Elise Downing, a representative of the Cascadia Forest Defenders.
The protestors made their way downtown while blocking traffic.
“We are out here today to hold those corporations that are funding these extractive industries responsible,” said Downing.
According to the protestors, the protest was a response to the banks for not responding to the group’s demands made a week ago during a similar march.
“They are harming us. They are continuing systems of oppression and we won’t stand for it. We think that our human health, our lives and our future as a community are more important than their profits,” said Downing.
The protestors roped a banner on the traffic signals that read, “We will dismantle the pipeline,” referring to the proposed U.S.-Canada oil pipeline.
Geneva Gill spoke to the group of protestors and pointed out the lack of response from the banks.
The march concluded back at the Erb Memorial Union at the University of Oregon where speakers continued to discuss problems with other protestors.
A police vehicle followed the march from behind. No arrests were made.

Your liberal progressive Government has the regulation authority over banks. Could that be why they pay almost zero interest and charge 18 percent plus on your credit cards. Yes just keep cutting off your nose in spite of your face. Keep your liberal progressives in office until everyone is in the food line. By the way regulation has run amok under this administration to the tune of costing the economy over a Trillion dollars a year.
@souptonuts I am curious who you are speaking at when you say " your liberal progressive government ", do you think the people in this march are democrats?
@applesauce I don't know if they are Democrats, I used to be a Democrat, but I can tell you this if they are they are not the same Democrats I always knew and was proud to be called one. Now I am and Independent. The State of Oregon and the Country right at this time is mostly ran by Progressives. If the Progressives identify with the Democrats that is not my fault. I say they are driving the country into the ground. These are my beliefs. You fortunately are able to have your own beliefs, have a nice day. Vote to uphold all of our constitution, and rid our society of greed, untruths, lack of honor, and corruption. If that is your goal we are on the same page, and our country will prosper again. Leave us on this course and we are sure to fail more and more.
Maybe some of the negative commenters would like a 1938 Germany where a protest like this would get one lined up in front of a firing squad. Â If folks made time to march maybe they felt strongly in there views. Â In this issue of National Geographic it had article on fracking, which is horizontal drilling for gas and oil. There is a Halaburton loophole they created which voids all drillers from the the Clean Water Drinking Act. Is fouling water aquifers with no accountability good? Â Can we as Americans get past labels and name calling and come together on some common ground? Â Quite frankly we need a billion person march to get big business, money out of government and bring some jobs back home. Â Maybe I got a concussion today and dreaming.

How and why should banks 'respond' to a bunch of ignorant goofballs walking aound in the street blocking traffic?
look at the photo of top hat dude. Â Leather jacket, logging boots, hair dye and bike from someplace in Asia....yeah buddy, you really stand for something alright. Â I think he's already had a couple of hits of the old "pipeline"
Idiots all!

I can't remember the last time i saw more welfare recipients in one picture and actually marching ,which would mean effort of some sort from them.Â
You are sure your statement is correct ?
Terrorists...... biting the hands that feed them.Â
@thisBITES! They blend in like the Taliban! Constantly vandalizing private/public property, without being treated as they are by definition TERRORIST to the US economy.
@BakerOregonBakerOregon So you really think this group of folks dressed as clowns walking in the street, laughing singing and dancing are comparable to people who fly airplanes into buildings full of people, or hide bombs in the road to kill people passing by? This language is pathetic, and it is the reason people seeking to make change must turn to these type sof tactics. It is impossible to hold a conversation with such unreasonable people as yourselves, and I say again, you should be ashamed. You stand against the ideas, behaviors, and attitudes that created this nation, and on the side of those who are currently destroying it. I would not disagree that arsonists and saboteurs are terrorists, even tough I may agree with what they stand for, there actions are comparable to terrorism, intended to frighten people into changing their ways, but this march is just a protest.
Cascadia is a place, not a group of people. " they blend in" , I wonder who you think these people are, being a regular person isn't called blending in, it is called being a regular person. A few of them have been convicted of trespassing during protests. Your comparison to the Taliban continues to be ludicrous. These people not only " could be your neighbor", they ARE your neighbors, they are mostly citizens of Eugene, and most of them have homes, is this something that bothers you? I would love to hear you better explain how you think the folks participating in this march have " similar tactics" to the Taliban. Also, please note, no property, private or public was vandalized during this march, as you previously said in a post, in fact the police were present and felt no need to do anything about it.
@applesauce Sorry; I meant the Cascadia people blend in like it could be your neighbor, teacher, doctor, ect. The second they leave that parade they blend in with the rest off us, this is what the Taliban does in there native countries. You must not know much about there similar tactics. Some off the Cascadia members have even been convicted of it before for there crimes and they say they will "dismantle the pipeline". Â
@thisBITES! LOL, what a stupid thing to say. If you call these people terrorists, what do you call Osama Bin Laden? Such ridiculous hyperbole, you should be ashamed of yourself.Â
@applesauce Make no sense do you , the force is weak in this one.
