Sick time for all workers in Eugene? Council debates topic »Play Video

EUGENE, Ore. - Should employers doing business in Eugene be required to give all employees paid sick time?

The City Council debated the topic but took no vote Wednesday.

Portland recently approved such a local law.

Some Eugene City Councilors had sharp disagreements on the idea.

"This will cost in the real world. This will cost our community hundreds and hundreds of jobs," said Councilor Mike Clark. "And in the real world, this will cost Eugene dozens of businesses."

Councilor Claire Syrett disagreed.

"Workers and businesses both will benefit when the estimated 25,000 workers in Eugene who don't have any security right now gain some added financial security," she said.

There could be a final vote on the issue by the Council at the end of May.
