Work begins on Nobel Peace Park in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. - Backhoes and dump trucks got to work Wednesday on a new park within a park.

The Nobel Peace Park at Alton Baker Park will be the nation's first recognizing American winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The 2-acre park is going in near the DeFazio Bridge.

The park has been funded entirely through donations.

"The main thing is a wandering path," said John Attig with the Nobel Peace Laureate Project. "The path to peace is never straight; that's part of the design. Along it will be a couple of walls.

Thos walls will have pictures of the 24 American winners of the peace prize.

Attig said $250,000 in cash and material donations will make the park possible. It should be done in the next 3 months.
