The University of Oregon men's basketball team will postpone the upcoming Italian Foreign Tour according to head coach Dana Altman. The Ducks were scheduled to depart for the 10-day exhibition on Monday, August 23, but now intend on taking the trip prior to the 2011-12 season.
Altman cited the team's overall health as the reason for pushing back the travel plans. "We just don't have enough healthy bodies to compete. To play four or five games over there and to have the limited numbers, it seemed better for us to wait a year to maximize that team-building experience."
In leading up to the scheduled trip, Oregon practiced five times for a total of 11 hours. UO plans to file a waiver with the NCAA to clarify when these practices/hours will be assessed to the program.
"The hope is to have those hours come off next year's trip - to limit us to five practices or so prior to the anticipated 2011-12 foreign tour," Altman said. "It is important to our program that we retain all of our allotted practice hours as we enter the upcoming 2010-11 season."
NCAA schools on the quarter system are allowed to begin the customary preseason Wednesday, Sept. 15, with eight-hour workout weeks. The Ducks can begin official practices for the 2010-11 season as early as 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.
