Challengers win first game at Northwest Regional

BILLINGS, MT - The Eugene Challengers won the first game of the American Legion Northwest Regional Tournament over the host Billings Scarlets, 8-1 on Thursday.
Nick Funyak hit a solo home run for the Scarlets in the top of the first inning off Eugene starter Jake Lessel, but that was all the scoring for the host team.
Lessel only gave up two more hits from there. He pitched a complete game, striking out 16 with just two walks.
The Challengers scored runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Erik Long led the way, going 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Eugene scored its first run on a fielder's choice when Ben Giland grounded out to first base, scoring Zach Eyster. The Challengers had 13 hits while the Scarlets committed three errors.
Eugene advances to play Lakeside, Washington on Friday at approximately 6pm PDT.
