Ducks Bergsma wins fifth Pac-12 POW award

Ducks Bergsma wins fifth Pac-12 POW award
Alaina Bergsma was named Pac-12 Player of the Week Monday.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After helping the then-No. 5 Oregon volleyball team (16-1, 7-1) to another memorable weekend sweep of then-No. 2 Washington and Washington State, redshirt senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma was again honored Monday as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Helping the Ducks to a home upset of the nation’s last unbeaten team, the returning All-American led the team vs. UW in kills (23) and tied her team season high. The Huskies ranked second nationally in blocks entering the week, but that didn’t stop Bergsma from becoming the first Husky foe to top .300 with +15 kills this year (.348, 23), and notch her 14th +.300 total on the year.

The night before, her 11 kills was one shy of the team high vs. the Cougars; her .435 hitting mark was her seventh +.400 mark of the season; and she topped the team in blocks (4) for the sixth time in 2012.

She led the team in points in both matches to give her 11 team-high honors this year to go with 10 top kills totals.  Her weekend kills average (4.86) also topped her season average (4.60) that ranked eighth nationally last week for one of the nation’s most balanced offenses.

She also joined the Ducks’ all-time career kills list (10th, 1,099) after the Husky tilt, and also stands seventh in points (1,216.5) and eighth in hitting (.269) in her 2 1/2 seasons at Oregon.

On the year, she leads the team in kills (4.63 p/s), aces (0.26 p/s) and points (5.18 p/s), and ranks second in hitting (.348) and third in blocks (0.54).

The league’s other weekly awards for top defensive player and top freshman both went to Stanford’s Kyle Gilbert and Inky Ajanaku, respectively.

Overall for the Ducks, Monday’s weekly honor was the 17th in head coach Jim Moore’s eight years at the helm, and 26th all-time for Oregon since 1986.

Earlier this year, Bergsma picked up similar honors after she won D.C. Kohl Sports Impact Classic MVP honors in late August. The returning All-American helped then-No. 20 Oregon opened the season with sweeps of Toledo and Houston, then rallied from an 0-2 deficit at then-No. 24 Ohio State to a 3-2 win.

Her two honors this season give her five all-time after she won a pair of honors last year and one in 2010.

Her first Pac-12 (and national) weekly honor in ’10 came after UO swept then-returning NCAA qualifier WSU and ended the then-No. 7 Washington’s 36-set season win streak in a 3-1 decision in Eugene.

Against UW, she connected on match highs in kills (21), points (23) and hitting (.559); her kill tally was a team season high; and her hitting mark (.559) was third-best for UO in ‘10 and tops among efforts of 15 kills or more. The night before vs. the Cougars, she again led the team in kills (12) – her first honor of the season – and hit .417.

Before this season, Oregon’s previous all-time career high belonged to All-American Sonja Newcombe, who won four honors from 2006-09.

Another current Duck, junior setter Lauren Plum, also picked up similar league and national honors last month. The All-Pac-12 pick from Poway, Calif., staked her third Pac-12 career honor after UO swept both returning conference champion and then-No. 2 USC and No. 26 Oregon to open Pac-12 play.

Her 48 and 46 assists vs. OSU and USC are the team’s season high for three-set matches, and her weekend per set average (15.67) easily topped her prior season average entering the week (12.55) that led the nation.

A complete list of all-time Duck honorees follows below, and more information on the award is available at the www.Pac-12.org website.

This week, UO begins its first of two weeks of road action and plays at Arizona and Arizona State, Friday-Saturday, October 19-20. Next week, UO then plays at Colorado and Utah, Fri.-Sun., Oct. 26-28.

Looking ahead to November, Oregon’s next home action will be vs. California and No. 4 Stanford, Fri.-Sun., Nov. 2-4 at 6 and 1 p.m., respectively.

Duck fans can tune to watch five of its six next matches on Pac-12 Networks, with the Wildcat, Buffalo, Golden Bear and Cardinal tilts televised on the Pac-12 Oregon Network, and the Ute contest on the Pac-12 National Network.
