EUGENE, Ore. -- It may not be time to pop the cork on the champagne just yet, but you might want to go ahead and chill the bottle.

After defeating the #1 ranked UCLA Bruins 9-7 Friday at Howe Field, the University of Oregon Ducks thumped them today, 12-4 in the second game of the three-game  series on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The game only lasted five innings due to the eight-run rule.

“I’m extremely proud of the ladies,” said Head Coach Mike White. “We were relentless today. We didn’t stop trying to score runs, and we did a good job on the pitching mound.”

The Oregon Ducks had a strong offensive game. They started the game off with four runs in the first inning, and four more in the second. First baseman Kailee Cuico led the team’s offense with a homerun in the second inning followed by a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Ducks ahead 12-2. Cuico tallied seven RBI’s for the game.

“I just had to be aggressive in the strike zone, and just wait for my pitches and attack those,” said Cuico.

The Ducks played solid defense to back up their runs. Courtney Ceo had key plays at third, and Alyssa Gillespie had a big catch in right field, climbing the outfield fence to make the snag. The UCLA Bruins put up a fight against the Ducks in the top of the fifth inning, with two homeruns. After the second homerun, with just one out left to end the game, Coach White put Cheridan Hawkins in to relieve Karissa Hovinga.

“You never want to give that team a chance,” said White. “If you get a chance to win the game, you take it, and I can’t do that with my best sitting on the bench.”

Hawkins finished off the batter and ended the game in front of a huge crowd.

The Oregon Ducks will face the UCLA Bruins for the final game of the series Sunday at 1pm.
