SPRINGFIELD, OR - Mercedes Russell announced on Tuesday that she has decided to play college basketball at the University of Tennessee.
The nation's number one female recruit had whittled her decision down to Tennessee and Louisville, but went with her childhood dream school of Tennessee.
"Tennessee has always been my dream school ever since I was a little kid," said Russell. "After visiting several times, I just felt it was the best fit for me."
There was much jubulation in Knoxville when Russell called the Tennessee coaching staff to let them know of her decision to become a Lady Vol.
"When I called Tennessee, they were jumping, screaming and yelling on the phone," said Russell. "They were all excited."
The six-foot, five-inch Russell has helped lead the Springfield Millers to back-to-back 5A state championships.
