EUGENE - The No. 4 University of Oregon volleyball team (21-3, 12-3) triumphed in a back-and-forth battle with upset-minded Arizona State (17-12, 6-10) to stake its 10th straight win in the series.
In Friday's five-set battle at Matthew Knight Arena, the Ducks won by a 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-13 count to hold onto second place in the nation's top volleyball league.
"ASU is a really dangerous team to play," Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. "We dominated in game one. In game two, we had the match up (rotation-wise) that we wanted, but got taken advantage of and let it slip away. We again stopped worrying about it after game three and started getting after it offensively, but they battled back and blocked us well in the fourth set. We have to be better at overcoming our own mistakes."
On offense, the Ducks featured three hitters with +10 kills and topped +.300 both for the 12th time this season.
In the team comparisons, UO held advantages in hitting (.316-.280), assists (69-62) and digs (62-61). ASU owned edges in blocks (13.0-7.5) and aces (4-2), and became only the third Duck foe to lead the latter category this year.
For Oregon, redshirt senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma landed a team season high in kills (28) and points (29) - her 17th and 16th team highs this year - and her .333 mark topped .300 for the 18th time this season.
On Friday, Brenner added 17 kills, hit .297, and posted 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Junior middle blocker Ariana Williams topped the team in hitting (.421) for a team-best 11th time this season, and her 10 kills was her 10th +10-kill total of the season.
Junior setter Lauren Plum posted 61 assists - her seventh +60-assist total of her career and fourth of the season.
The All-Pac-12 returnee also tied for the team lead in aces (1) with senior outside hitter Katherine Fischer, and the latter just missed her 34th career double-double with her nine kills and 13 digs.
Fischer moved up a spot on the Duck all-time attempts list to seventh (3,190) past Madeline Ernst (eighth, 3,167, 1995-98).
Plum also made her third appearance on the Oregon all-time season list in assists. Her 2012 total (1,071) stands 10th-best and moved her past Tina Adolph (1,062, 1985). Plum already stands sixth (1,330) and eighth (1,246) in 2011 and 2010.
Senior libero Haley Jacob racked up 24 digs - her fourth-highest tally of the season and her 21st- +20-dig total of her career.
Freshman middle blocker Canace Finley topped the blocks column for the seventh time this year with her four on the evening.
Sun Devil category leaders included Macey Gardner (19 kills, 20 points), Alexia Pinson (.471, 7 blocks), Allison Palmer (61 assists), Shannan McCready (2 aces) and Stephanie Preach (25 digs).
