EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks started off the Civil War series against the Oregon State Beavers with a bang. The Ducks proved their holding of the number one spot by defeating the Oregon State Beavers 10-5 in the first game of the three-game series.

“We try not to make a bigger deal of it than it is, but it sure is a nice honor to have, and we’d like to keep it for a little bit longer,” said Head Coach Mike White about being ranked number one.

Oregon Ducks catcher Janelle Lindvall led the offense with a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, putting the Ducks ahead 6-2.

“When we have bases loaded, I just try to pretend like nobody is on, and I’m just looking for a strike—luckily I got one,” said Lindvall.

The Ducks finished the game with 11 hits and just four strikeouts. The Ducks strong offensive game helped back up pitcher Cheridan Hawkins. Hawkins pitched all seven innings of the game. She racked up eight strikeouts and gave up six hits.

“The innings that I did good, I definitely controlled the zone and started ahead,” said Hawkins. “I love when our hitters do good, and I have complete faith in them when I make errors and give up homeruns.”

The Beavers tightened the gap in the score in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI and a two run homerun by shortstop CJ Chirichigno to make the score 6-5. During their last at bat in the top of the seventh inning, the Ducks came back with four runs to clinch the victory.

“Any time we give up a run, we have to go back and answer with a run,” said White. “Anytime they score, we have to come out with a shutdown, and that’s what Cheridan did in that last inning.”

The Ducks will face the Beavers on Sunday at 2pm for the second game of the three-game series.
