EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon Ducks made a statement against the number one ranked UCLA in the first game of the three game series today at Howe Field. The Ducks defeated the Bruins 9-7 with two homeruns in the fifth inning. “We’re very happy to take a win off the number one team in the country,” said Head Coach Mike White.

UCLA was the first team to score, with one run in the first inning. The Ducks immediately bounced back with three runs, also in the first inning. Cheridan Hawkins pitched for the Ducks until the seventh inning, when Head Coach Mike White put Karissa Hovinga in to finish the game.

“I want to work harder for my team,” said pitcher Hawkins.” “They had 11 hits and nine runs, and I want to defend better for them.”

Although Coach White was planning on pitching Hawkins for the whole game, and saving Hovinga for Saturday’s game, he still plans to pitch Hovinga in tomorrow’s game, even though she threw one inning today.

UCLA  scored again in the fifth inning, and then the Ducks followed with two home runs in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Janelle Lindvall hit the first homerun, and center fielder Koral Costa followed with another, making the score 8-3. In the top of the seventh, the Bruins rallied with four runs off two homeruns, making it a close game. The final score was 9-7 with the Ducks victorious.

“Anytime we give up a run, we go and answer back,” said Head Coach Mike White. “I’m proud of the way the ladies battled today with their bats.”

Catcher Lindvall had three hits and five RBI’s in the first game against the Bruins. “I believe if we play to our potential we can beat anyone,” said Lindvall.

The Ducks will take on the Bruins again on Saturday at 3pm, and Sunday at 1pm to finish the series.
