EUGENE - The No. 10 University of Oregon softball team (24-4, 1-0) opened Pac-12 play Saturday with a 4-3 win over No. 15 Stanford (22-6, 0-1) at Howe Field.
Senior right fielder Samantha Pappas knocked in her second game-winning RBI of the season, thanks to a two-out, seventh-inning double down the right field line that scored sophomore Janie Takeda.
The sophomore center fielder Takeda had reached on a one-out bunt single to the shortstop, and moved to scoring position after a two-out walk to sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico.
UO scored its first run in the fourth inning when senior second baseman Kaylan Howard drilled her team-leading eighth homer of the season over the left field wall. The four-bagger also moved the returning All-Region choice into sixth place all-time for UO career-wise with 33.
The next batter, Cuico, followed with a double to right field, then advanced to third base and home on a pair of illegal pitches by Stanford reliever Kelsey Stevens.
At game's end, Takeda (2-for-4) ended with her 16th multi-hit game of the season, and five others hit safely once.
Duck senior Jessica Moore started the game, struck out two, allowed six hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
Freshman Cheridan Hawkins (9-1) relieved her to open the fifth inning, and retired eight of her nine outs via strikeouts. She allowed no walks and only one hit among the 10 batters she faced.
Stanford starter and senior Teagan Gerhart struck out none, walked none, allowed three hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Stevens (9-3) struck out six, walked three, yielded four hits, and one of her two runs allowed were earned.
Looking ahead, the two teams play again on Saturday at 3 p.m. on Sunday and at noon on Monday.
