PORTLAND, Ore. -- South Eugene Axemen ended their 2013 football season on a disappointing note Friday night in Portland against the Westview Wildcats.
After a promising start this season, winning their first two non-conference games, the Axemen fell into a slump and were unable to come up with a successful game plan for the rest of the fall. They finished with nothing in the win column for the entire conference season.
Playing their last conference game at Thurston’s home turf on October 25th, the Axemen were defeated 20-7.
Despite losing all their conference games this season, the Axemen played the Westview Wildcats in Portland in what is known as a play-in post season game Friday evening.
The weather was sloppy. The play not much better. But the game had drama.
After pointing out to the officials he felt they were missing holding and personal foul infractions against the Westview Wildcats, which quickly escalated into a heated shouting match, Axemen Head Coach Chris Miller was ejected from the game before halftime.
Tempers turned nasty and the weather turned even nastier.
The Axemen sophomore quarterback Ray Roundtree was knocked out of the game with an knee injury in the fourth quarter.
In the end it was just too much for the Axemen and the final score showed they had lost their last game of this year 41-6.
With the return of Coach Miller, Coach Dino Philyaw and Coach Kevin Leonard, this season was heralded as a rebuilding season. Much as accomplished, but the win-loss column shows the Axemen have much more to do.
