KVAL Sports coverage of National Signing Day at the University of Oregon.
Running back Lache Seastrunk first announced he was headed to Oregon by trumpeting a bill-shaped duck call in his high school gym in Temple, Texas.
On Wednesday he made it official with a letter of intent to play for the Ducks. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound Seastrunk is one of the highlights of the Ducks' latest recruiting class.
"Real talented player," Oregon coach Chip Kelly said. "He can flat-out fly."
Seastrunk was expected to follow in Reggie Bush's footsteps at USC. Then Trojan coach Pete Carroll decided to bolt for the Seattle Seahawks.
Seastrunk announced his choice last week at Temple High School's gym. He wore a gray Oregon T-shirt and blew on the duck call for a crowd of teammates and fellow students.
At Temple, Seastrunk ran for a school-record 4,217 yards in 32 career games. He scored 52 touchdowns, and topped off his high school career by running 305 yards in the team's season finale.
Compared to current Ducks running back LaMichael James, who gained a Pac-10 Conference freshman record 1,546 yards last season, Seastrunk said Kelly impressed him.
"He's the smartest offensive coach out there, I could tell he had a genuine heart." Seastrunk told the Temple Daily Telegram newspaper.
The elder Dungy advised Kelly after Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount punched a Boise State player in the opener last season. Blount was suspended for the season, but later returned to the team after meeting certain conditions.
Kelly said his famous father didn't have much to do with the younger Dungy coming to Oregon.
"Tony never once told me he had a son who was a football player," the coach said.
Oregon also scored Ricky Heimuli, a 6-foot-6 defensive end from Salt Lake City who chose the Ducks over Utah, UCLA and Washington.
Oregon went 10-3 last season to win the Pac-10 title and Rose Bowl berth. The Ducks lost 26-17 to Ohio State in Pasadena and finished the season ranked No. 11 in the final AP poll.
Oregon received letters of intent from 20 high school players and three junior-college transfers. Ten of the recruits are from California, three are from Texas and two — tight end Curtis White from Sheldon High School and wide receiver Keanon Lowe from Portland's Jesuit — are homegrown.
The recruiting class includes nine offensive players, 10 defensive players, two athletes who could play on either side of the ball and two special-teams players, long snapper Drew Howell of Tehechapi High School in California and kicker Andrew Maldonado from Colton High School, also in California.
"We want to be known for speed and I think we will," Kelly said. "One thing to say about this class is it's a speed class."
