EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks came back with vengeance against the Arizona State Sun Devils, and won game two 12-2, after their 4-2 loss in game one. Ducks player Stevie Jo Knapp ended the game with a walk off three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth.
“At practice, nobody hits the ball further than she does,” said Head Coach Mike White. “We keep trying to give her opportunities when the time is right, and today she came through. I’m just happy for her, because she works really hard.”
The Ducks’ offense exploded in the bottom of the second inning, putting nine runs on the board. Ducks catcher Janelle Lindvall hit a homerun, and players Courtney Ceo and Alyssa Gillespie both had two RBI’s. The Arizona State Sun Devils tried to fight back in the top of the third inning, but only managed to bring in two runs for the game.
“I thought we did a really good job of being patient early on,” said White. “We hit the ball great, gap to gap.
Ducks Karissa Hovinga pitched the entire game and struck out five batters. She allowed just three hits from the Sun Devils.
“Karissa Hovinga pitched probably the best game I’ve seen her throw, and that was really the catalyst there,” said White.
“I was hitting my corners pretty well and getting ahead of batters,” said Hovinga. “To come back and win that game by that many runs, I have to think it’s going to make them think twice tomorrow a little bit. It was a big deal for us.”
The No. 1 ranked Oregon Ducks will face the No. 3 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils at Howe Field Sunday at 2pm to determine the winner of the three game series.
