EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks dropped their first game, 4-2, of the three-game series against Arizona State after consecutively sweeping the past three Pac 12 teams they have faced. The Ducks allowed three errors in the game that were key to the Sun Devils scoring.

“We had some good discipline at times, and other times we didn’t have the discipline,” said Head Coach Mike White. “We didn’t get the big hits when we needed them and we gave them those runs. It really should have been a 2-2 ball game going into that last inning, so I’m a little disappointed in the way we played overall.”

Arizona State took the lead in the first inning, with a homerun by Cheyenne Coyle. The Ducks were unable to get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning, with an RBI double by Nikki Udria and a homerun by Koral Costa.

“I think when we played today, we played a little tense,” said Costa. “We just have to remember what we say to each other in the locker room and play for each other.”

The Sun Devils took back their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to make it a 4-2 ball game. Ducks pitcher Cheridan Hawkins threw 122 pitches and struck out 10 batters. Oregon Ducks Jasmine Smithson-Willett came in to relieve Hawkins in the top of the seventh and made a key strikeout with runners on base.

“When we are successful, is when we have fun,” said Hawkins. “I think we got away from that just a little bit.”

“There’s some things we just need to clean up, but she is a sophomore. Those are learning things,” said White. “Hopefully she’ll bounce back and have her good stuff the rest of the weekend.”

The Ducks will face the Sun Devils for game two at Howe Field Saturday at 4pm, and again on Sunday at 2pm.
